Lucy Abel and Clara's Patchwork Blanket

Lucy Abel was thrilled when the news came from Canada. Her great great granddaughter Kim was expecting a baby. And, when babies arrive, presents are needed. And, Lucy Abel started to think. And, the idea she came up with was square and very unusual. And, that was quite fitting. Kim's little family in Canada is unusual, too.

Kim, the mother to be, is Canadian and her husband Gregor is Austrian. And, both have relatives all over the world. There are parents and family in Austria and Canada, aunts and uncles in New Zealand, cousins in New York, and, even a cousin in China. And, Lucy Abel's idea was as simple as it was brilliant. A family present - a family patchwork blanket. And so, the call for patches went out to the world.

And, the response was 100%, and soon the patches started arriving in Canada. All Kim had to do was sew them together. And, this was exciting. A present in instalments and coming from all over the world. And, when little Clara was born the blanket was ready and waiting! And, Kim and her husband and everyone else were delighted. But, this was just the beginning.

Lucy Abel's idea had an another dimension as well. It had time. The first squares that everyone made were smaller than normal, and the blanket was just big enough for a cot. But, this blanket had promise and was set to grow with the years.

Everyone had promised a new square every year for the next 20 years. Meaning, the blanket will grow at the same speed as Clara. But, of course, there's another side, too. This unique patchwork blanket is set to become a reminder of the people who made it. They will always be present. And, all because Lucy Abel sat down and had an idea that was different that went round the world and finished in Canada. And, now people will not only be knitting for the next 20 years, but also keeping in touch. And, that's a very unusual thing.

Babies bring pleasure. This we all know. But, with a little help from a dear old great great grandmother in Vienna, little Clara brought more. And, that was the nicest of all. And, who knows, this idea might work for you, too. All that is needed are friends. The rest will come on its own. A blanket for life! And, what could be better?
