Halina Seidl
Hard Work and a Great Little Restaurant

Halina Seidl is the owner of a great little restaurant. And, times are good. But, things used to be different. The Poland of her youth was a very hard place, and Halina Seidl decided to leave and go to Vienna. And, being young, she only had thoughts for success.

To begin with, Halina Seidl got a job washing pots in a restaurant. It was hard, dirty and hot and the hours were long, but, the pay was OK. But, life was good for her German, and within just three very short months her German was fluent. And, then came her first big surprise.

The cook at the restaurant fell ill, and Halina Seidl was asked to step in. And, she was good. Her cooking was popular and the restaurant was full every night. But, all good things come to an end, and three months later the cook returned in good health. Halina Seidl went back to washing the pots and cleaning the floor. But, she didn't stay long. Her second big surprise came seven months later.

It was a sausage stand in the Prata, Vienna's amusement park. The rent was reasonable, and, Halina Seidl had saved enough money to get going. And, she was happy. She had very own business and the money she earned was all hers. And, her success was her character. She understood people, she knew how to please, and she knew how to smile. Halina Seidl liked people and people liked her. And, she stayed in the Prata for four happy years. And, then came surprise number three.

Another sausage stand! But, this time a sausage stand with a difference. It had its own little restaurant built on at the back. It was perfect. And, soon the people were coming. There were the mid-morning retirees playing cards and enjoying a wine, there were the afternoon housewives enjoying a coffee and cake, and there were the lunchers - people from all walks of life, and all enjoying not only very good cooking, but great hospitality, too. Everyone's welcome at Halina Seidel's. But, Halina Seidl's strength is her cooking. And, whilst standing in the kitchen she often thinks back to her childhood in Poland. And, she has never forgotten it.

Whilst her brothers were out working in the fields, Halina Seidl was helping her granny cook lunch. Poland made Halina Seidl, it gave her all that she knows, and now she is saying thank you in a very nice way. Every year, Halina Seidl spends two weeks in Poland teaching young girls how to cook. Traditional Polish cooking will not be forgotten. And, Halina Seidl's own daughters?

They, too are interested in cooking, and one of them may even take over the restaurant. Who knows? But, until then, or surprise number four, Halina Seidl will still welcome her guests with her wonderful cooking in her great little restaurant where everyone's welcome.

P.S. Halina Seidl's restaurant is in the 13th district of Vienna in the Hietzinger Hauptstrasse at number 90 (just where the railway crosses the street).
