Hallowe'en or Halloween

October the 31st is the eve or day before The Feast of All Saints or All Hallows. Hallows is an old word meaning holy, and e'en is Gaelic for evening.

Many traditional games are played on Hallowe'en. One such game is bobbing for apples which are floating in a tub or big bucket of water. The word bobbing means catching in the mouth.

Hallowe'en is finished with a supper of roasted apples and a glass of beer.
