Nicole Wrixon by Nigel A James
Sharing
Connecting and Listening – a story of magical seeing!
This
week, I had the very great pleasure of meeting Nicole Wrixon. She was
at the VHS Hietzing in Vienna and putting the finishing touches
to her new exhibition. And, it was good. And, Nicole Wrixon's
story, which is just as fascinating, started in France a long time
ago.
Nicole
Wrixon was born into a very creative family, and she and her brother
were encouraged to do well and succeed in all subjects including the
arts. And, if her mother had not had a camera, Nicole Wrixon's story
might have been different. Photography in those days was popular and
Nicole Wrixon
knew it was hers. And so, to help her get started, her
parents gave her a camera, a Kodak Brownie Starlet. And, with her eye
for fine arts, Nicole Wrixon
started developing a style of her own. And it was special and
natural. And, when the time came to move on,
she not only chose teaching and languages, but photography, too.
And, Nicole Wrixon has been true to her choice ever since.
As
a language teacher, Nicole Wrixon specialized in English, and, being
married to an Englishman and living not far from Oxford in England,
was able to go deep into English. And, so as to make her lessons and
lectures more appealing,
Nicole Wrixon
used her photographic skills to the full. And, in this way, was able
to share her experiences in the form of eye-catching slides,
prints and super 8 films. And, sharing is also connecting, and when
people connect, they feel free to ask questions. Nicole Wrixon was a
very good teacher.
And,
very good teachers have a deep interest in people as well. And, it
was this that led Nicole Wrixon to portrait photography. And
portrait photography, says Nicole Wrixon, is probably one of the most
interesting art forms there is. It is reflection. Good
portraits reflect feelings. Those of the person pressing the shutter
- and his or her opposite number. And reflections have always been
important for Nicole Wrixon.
Her
teaching, for example, was always reflected in the success of her
students, her love of English has always been reflected in her use of
the language, and her passion for travel reflects in her photos.
Reflection is passion. And so, Nicole Wrixon's next
logical step was reflective photography. And, this is an art that
she has perfected.
And,
there is much to be seen in her pictures. There is water and sky,
there is shadow and light, there is movement in depths and stillness
in shallows. And there is more. There is the mystery of light and
the question of where reflection begins and reality ends. Her works
are not only subjects of study, but works of exactness as well. The
understanding of light and reflection of angles are essential for
this kind of work.
And
now, living in Vienna with her husband, Nicole Wrixon is happy. She
has much to reflect and too much to do. Her present exhibition is
her 25th show and her work is much in demand. And, not
only that. She's still actively teaching which means she's still
sharing, connecting and listening. And,
her camera is still just as important as ever. Nicole Wrixon has
never stopped following the threads that began in the
France of her childhood. And, she still has her very first camera,
the one that started it all. And, it still has its magic. And, it's
magic that attracts. And, when the magic is right the pictures are
right. It's all in reflections and the way of seeing the light.
And, Nicole Wrixon saw the light a long time ago, and has been using
its magical power ever since for the good of her pictures. Nicole
Wrixon – a lady of reflection and light.
Nicole
Wrixon's exhibition, Flüchtige Augenblicke (Passing Glimpses), is on
at the VHS Hietzing in Vienna until the 22. October of this year. It
is well worth a visit. nj
